Breast Reconstruction
The decision to undergo a mastectomy or lumpectomy is often correlated with concern over the possible loss or deformity of the breast. However, there have been many advances made in the breast reconstruction field, allowing patients to enjoy natural looking outcomes. Our physicians can often reconstruct a woman’s breast with incredible results.
Breast Reconstruction Procedure Options
Breast reconstruction can be done immediately after mastectomy, or during a separate procedure at a later date. Oftentimes, a tissue expander will be placed under the patient’s skin and pectoral muscle at the time of mastectomy. Then, following two to three months of expansions, a breast implant can be placed. Our group performs tissue expander and implant reconstruction often, as this technique offers great results with less downtime. However, depending on their specific situation, some patients may need a more aggressive reconstruction approach.
In these cases, we may recommend using the patient’s own tissue to reconstruct the breast. This type of “autologous” reconstruction can use a patient’s own abdominal skin or muscle (TRAM flap), or back skin or muscle (Latissimus flap).
Those who undergo mastectomy or reconstruction on one breast will often undergo a symmetry procedure on the opposite breast. This procedure may be a breast augmentation, breast reduction, or breast lift, depending on the individual situation.
Following breast reconstruction, the breasts may change over time. Asymmetry, recurrent deformity, or implant hardening may occur. If you experience these side-effects, we offer revision surgery to restore the breasts to a natural, symmetrical appearance.
Our group understands that each patient is unique, and has her own needs. A consultation will allow an individualized plan to be created for you, as well as allow you time to discuss which reconstruction method is right for you. Contact us in Scottsdale, AZ for more information.
